The September meeting of the Historical Society of Gulfport will feature a presentation by Deidre Dunn-Pleasant, daughter of the Gulfport physician Dr. Felix H. Dunn. The late Dr. Dunn, who practiced medicine for early 50 years, was a leader in the Civil Rights Movement on the Mississippi Gulf Coast. His Gulfport house and office are now a State Historical Landmark. She will discuss his amazing life history as a World War II veteran, a football star at Alcorn State University, and a graduate of Meharry Medical College. He was a long-time president of Gulfport’s NAACP, the first African American member of the Harrison County Development Commission, and he also served on President Ronald Reagan’s Council for Minority Entrepreneurs. The infirmary at Alcorn State University is named for him. Deidre Dunn-Pleasant recently established the Dr. Felix H. Dunn, M.D. Foundation.
The program will be a report on the success of Black History Week project held at Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College at JD in Gulfport.
